Spotify Launches ‘Sound Up LatinX’ to Give Aspiring Podcasters a Voice | Culture

To help diversify the podcast community, Spotify has launched Sound Up LatinX, a new edition to its Sound Up global program, to discover underrepresented podcasters who want to create or expand their podcast shows. Currently, Spotify is inviting these aspiring podcasters to apply for Sound Up LatinX.

“The podcast ecosystem is developing fast in the U.S. and it’s already one of the most consolidated in the world,” said Fernando Spuri, Manager at Sound Up. “However, when we check the podcasts charts, there’s a lot to be improved regarding the diversity of creators. And with more than 60 million LatinX living in the U.S., it became clear that the LatinX community was the next to address with the program.”

The 10 individuals accepted into the Sound Up LatinX program will participate in a virtual, four-week training program later this year and learn the ins and outs of producing a podcast. Finalists with the best podcast ideas after the training program is completed will then be invited to attend the second round of Sound Up LatinX sessions next year.

Spuri wants applicants to know that Sound Up LatinX is searching for all types of shows. “We’re looking for creators with powerful ideas that want to tell whatever stories on whatever subjects resonate with them best,” he said. “Of course, those subjects are an intrinsic part of almost all Latinx, but how and with what intensity they want to address them is up to them.”

Spuri adds that he is excited to work with prospective podcasters because they are part of a “multidimensional community” that wants their voices to be heard. If that means putting a mic in front of them, so they can host their own podcast and reach bigger audiences, Sound Up is game.

“This is an amazing opportunity to bring in new, diverse voices and maybe help course correct the podcast landscape regarding diversity,” Spuri said. “We’re really thrilled about the potential of the ideas that we’ll receive.”
